- Matt Alexander was released by the Oakland A's during spring training in 1978. While in Mexico in February 1978 Matt came down with a case of hepatitis. Alexander couldn't make it to spring training and was released. Matt went to barber's college and stayed in shape. He called a friend who knew Pittsburgh Pirates manager Chuck Tanner. In September 1978 Alexander joined the Pirates. He appeared in seven games (all as a pinch runner), stole four bases in five attempts, and scored two runs.

- Sept 21 - Ran for Rennie Stennett in the 14th inning. Matt stole second base and then scored the winning run when catcher Tim Blackwell made a wild throw to second and CF Bobby Murcer made an error while backing up the play.
