- Jon Matlack was traded to the Texas Rangers in a big 4-team trade after the 1977 season. Jon bounced back from his off year in 1977, but it was his last big year as a pitcher. Matlack continued to pitch through the 1983 season, but he wasn't as successful after 1978.

- June 24 - Pitched a 2-hit shutout as the Rangers beat the California Angels 3-0.
- July 27 - Battled a bad cold and pitched a complete game victory over the Boston Red Sox.
- Sept 8 - Gave up ten runs (only three of them earned) in 5.2 innings as the Rangers lost to the Oakland A's 11-4.
