- Rick Manning bounced back from a 1977 season that was shortened by a back injury to reclaim the starting center field job for the Cleveland Indians. Manning had a typical "Rick Manning" year in 1978. His 1976 season was above his career norm and his 1977 season was below normal.

- Feb 8 - Signed a five year contract with the Indians. It was rumored that Rick would be traded to a contending club, but Manning ended up spending all five years with Cleveland.
- May 17 - Knocked in two runs in the 4th inning, walked and scored the tying run in the 8th inning, then singled in the winning run in the 10th inning of Cleveland's 5-4 win over the New York Yankees.
- Sept 22 - Singled in Duane Kuiper in the 10th inning to give the Indians an 8-7 win over the Yankees.
