- Steve Kemp was a pretty solid player for the Tigers in 1978. His numbers were very slightly down from his rookie 1977 season, but he would bounce back in 1979 to earn All Star honors.

- 1978 Highlights:
- July 30 - Had two RBI singles in Detroit's 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
- Aug 17 - Hit a grand slam and a double and had six RBI to lead the Tigers to a 9-5 win over the Cleveland Indians. The fans had booed Steve earlier in the game because of a couple of fielding errors that led to a Tiger loss on August 15.
- Sept 12 - Steve's 3-run homer helped the Tigers beat the New York Yankees 7-4.
