- This was Jerry Johnson's final card. Johnson was released during spring training and retired. Jerry retired with a lifetime record of 48-53 and an ERA of 4.31 during a ten year major league career.
- During his last season in 1977 Johnson was learning how to become a Hollywood stunt man.
He had a good 1971 season (12 wins, 2.97 ERA). I wonder what happened after that?
ReplyDeleteAfter having a rough year in 1973, it looks like Houston liked him for the first 2 months in 1974 (http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1144&dat=19740531&id=nVoqAAAAIBAJ&sjid=KlUEAAAAIBAJ&pg=4366,5891272). He got shelled a few times in June and the Astros sent him down for 2 months. Johnson came back in September 1974 but the Astros released him after the season. After that he split time between AAA and the majors in 75 and 76. Expansion added a year to his career in 1977.
DeleteLooks like his problems started before the 1973 season. He was a holdout and the Giants made an example of him by waiving him to the Cleveland Indians. The other holdouts that spring fell into line. (http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=860&dat=19730307&id=3XFUAAAAIBAJ&sjid=o48DAAAAIBAJ&pg=1616,3515389)
DeleteIt looks like Johnson also hurt his shoulder while doing unscheduled workouts during the players strike in 1972 (http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1755&dat=19720531&id=WroqAAAAIBAJ&sjid=kmYEAAAAIBAJ&pg=6947,6010941)
