1978 Topps Baseball #253 - Jim Kern

  • Jim Kern was an AL All Star for the second straight season in 1977 (he pitched 0.2 innings and allowed a hit and walked a man. Neither of them scored).
  • Kern had another good year out of the bullpen in 1978. After the season Jim was traded to the Texas Rangers. He had a great year in 1979 but then was up and down for the rest of his major league career.
  • Jim had eight Topps baseball cards from 1977-1983. He is smiling in six of those cards. The other two (1980 and 1981) are action cards.
  • 1978 Stats: 10-10, 13 saves, 3.08 ERA in 58 games
  • 1978 Highlights:
    • Aug 1 - Pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless ball to earn the save against the Kansas City Royals.
    • Sept 13 / 14 - Saved two straight games for the Indians against the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox were fighting for the AL East title and those were two tough losses for them. During the season Kern was 2-1 with three saves against the Red Sox.
